BN: UMNO-PAS Ketemu Minggu Depan?
By Kapal Berita

Pas gets word from on 3rd tech meeting for Malay unity talks

by Zubaidah Abu Bakar

27 February 2001

Pas has received notification from Umno to prepare for the third technical committee meeting, giving renewed optimism to the uncertainty surrounding the proposed Malay unity talks.

Confirming this here last night, Pas secretary-general Nasharudin Mat Isa said he had received a call from Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob yesterday morning for both sides to prepare for the third meeting.

"I told him Pas has no problem. I have been given mandate to decide whether to go for the technical committee meeting and I am saying yes,"' he told reporters here after opening the PAS Information and Trade Exposition at Kampung Padang Tok Kesop, Kubang Pasu.

Nasharuddin said Pas was awaiting a response from the Umno secretary-general who he said had promised to call in the net two days.

Nasharuddin, who is leading the four-member Pas technical team preparing for the proposed talks, said Pas was maintaining the pre-conditions and four topics.

He spoke at a ceramah earlier during which he claimed that the three pre-conditions and four conditional topics for discussions set by Pas were made known to Umno in the first technical committee meeting on Feb 8.

The four topics for discussion are the judiciary system, mismanagement of the country's economics, federalism and the attempt to take away the word Islam from Pas' official name.

The three pre-conditions are returning the oil royalty to Terengganu, alllowing Pas organ Harakah to be published twice-weekly and calling off police actions against opposition ceramahs to set a conducive atmosphere for the talks.
