Ezam Mohd Nor arrested at 9.00pm on Monday, 5 March 2001

Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor, the National Justice Party (keADILan) Youth Leader, was arrested around 9.00pm on Monday, 5 March 2001, in front of Dr Wan Azizah's, the party President's, house. Earlier that day, at 2.00pm, six police personnel entered Ezam's house without his consent or presence and ransacked it. They did not say what they were looking for.

In a strongly worded press release Ezam took Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir to task with regards to an Utusan Malaysian press report accusing Ezam of admitting that he is planning to topple the government.

"The latest episode in a series of episodes perpetuated by Utusan Malaysia, an UMNO propaganda organ masquerading as a newspaper, reveals Mahathir's strategy of using the media to create a climate of fear" said Ezam.

Ezam added, "This is a tactic of a desperate leader who sees his power eroding rapidly to the extent he would perpetuate a climate of fear just to distract Malaysians from the bigger issues of corruption and abuse of power."

"Today, Mahathir is using the same tactic to distract the people from questioning the mismanagement of the country's finances. Again, Mahathir is using the media and the police to attack the opposition and avoid answering the questions being raised by the people."

Ezam went on to say, "I personally have been persecuted no less than six times. Today, at 2.00pm, six police personnel entered my house without my permission or presence and ransacked my entire house. This 'raid' was in response to a police report made by the UMNO Youth Movement earlier today. The police report I made a year ago on the abuses of Mahathir, complete with tangible evidence, however, is being totally ignored by the police."

Ezam arrested by police, Pak Lah warns violent demos will be quelled

by Tony Emmanuel and Sarban Singh

The Government will quell violent street demonstrations and warned those involved they could face firm action.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who issued the warning today, was asked to comment on a Mingguan Malaysia report quoting Parti Keadilan Nasional Youth chief Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor as saying that the Opposition party would organise mammoth street demonstrations until they overthrow the Government.

Hours after Abdullah's statement, Ezam was arrested in connection with police investigations into what he allegedly told Mingguan Malaysia.

Federal territory Police chief Datuk Meor Chek Hussein Mahayuddin confirmed that Ezam was picked-up.

"He (Ezam) is assisting us in our investigations following police reports being lodged," he told the New Straits Times tonight.

Ezam was arrested outside the residence of Keadilan president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in Bukit Damansara at about 9.30pm.

Describing Ezams alleged statement as "seditious", Abdullah said it was also threatening as it could jeopardise national security.

"Such a statement," he said, "is aimed at overthrowing a Government elected by the people in a fairly conducted general election."

Asked whether the Government would use the Internal Security Act against Ezam, Abdullah, who is also Home Minister, said it would not for the time being.

On how the authorities would curb Keadilan's street demonstrations, Abdullah said: "We will not allow it."

"The matter (the alleged statement) is being investigated by the policem" he told reporters after a book launch here. "I am sure they know what to do...I will not interfere in the investigations."
